General questions

Students should ideally have at least one year of beginning band experience or be at the equivalent standard.

If you are in a non-competitive group, you will play on your regular school instrument. Students on trumpets, horns and euphoniums in pre-competitive and competitive groups will transition onto traditional brass band instruments which will be provided by FCYBA. We have a limited supply of mouthpieces so it is strongly suggested that you purchase your own, if possible.

Auditions for the FCYBA are performed virtually. Please provide a link to a video of your audition. A private YouTube post is preferred. If you choose to use GoogleDrive, please ensure that permissions are set to anyone with the link. Record up to five minutes of material that best demonstrates your lyrical and technical performing abilities. Brass players, please include a chromatic scale to show range. Percussionists, please include at least one excerpt from a mallet instrument and one non-mallet instrument when possible.

The brass band is a unique ensemble. All seats have a specific role and musical responsibility. Because of this, we do not place students in a ‘rank order system. Our highly experienced staff will listen to auditions for specific skills and consider other factors such as experience, tone, musicianship, technique, and leadership qualities.
